Local Area...

Hoxne (pronounced Hoxun) is a very attractive village not far from the small town of Eye, in Northern Suffolk. Here, it is claimed, the Saxon King Edmund was martyred by the Danes in 869 AD.

A memorial has been erected in the village, which is supposed to mark the very spot where East Anglia's most famous king met his untimely and somewhat grisly end.

The other notable happening associated with Hoxne was the discovery in 1992 of a huge hoard of Roman coins and gold and silver objects. Dutifully reported by the finder to the appropriate authorities this fabulous treasure is now safely under lock and key in the British Museum.

The village itself is quite spread out with the post office and The Swan located at the southern end on Low Street.

For more information on Hoxne visit the village website at www.hoxne.net.

Local Walks...

Hoxne is a real favourite with walkers. Whether you like a short stroll or a long walk, there is something to suit you. Most start from Hoxne Village Hall, however The Swan is a just 2 minute walk away.

A circular walk around this historic village and surrounding countryside. Walks of between 2 and 4 miles in length can be completed that visit Hoxne Church, St Edmund’s Monument and Brakey Wood Millennium Woodland. To download the walk as a PDF click here.

If you are more of a keen walker then there is a 12 mile walk around Hoxne as well as the neighbouring villages of Eye and Denham. This walk was featured in the Times Newspaper back in 2009. Wellies and boots are recommended when the ground is wet. For full details and maps click here.

One other village walk can be found on the AA website (3.5 miles).
